Fairfax County is making exciting moves that will add vibrancy, activity, and value to our neighborhoods. Two major recreational projects are underway five new pickleball courts in Fair Lakes and a brand new skate park in Woodlawn and together, they signal something bigger than just places to play. These projects showcase our county’s commitment to healthy lifestyles, family-friendly amenities, and community growth.
And for homeowners and future buyers in Springfield, Burke, Fairfax Station, and surrounding areas, these changes may also carry positive impacts on property values and neighborhood desirability.
What’s Happening?
Pickleball Courts at Greenbriar Park, Fair Lakes
Starting in late August, the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) will begin construction on five dedicated pickleball courts at Greenbriar Park. The courts will replace part of the existing parking lot.
What’s especially noteworthy is that this project was originally designed as a three-court expansion. But with pickleball’s popularity exploding across the country and here in Fairfax County the plan grew to five. This decision reflects not just a trend, but a response to the real demand of our local community.
Pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, appealing to all ages, from retirees seeking a fun, low-impact game to families and young adults enjoying its mix of competition and social interaction. By adding more courts, Greenbriar Park is set to become a local hub for recreation and connection. The project is expected to be complete later this year.
Skate Park at Mount Vernon Woods Park, Woodlawn
In September, Mount Vernon Woods Park began the second phase of its renovation, which will bring a brand-new skate park to Woodlawn. Designed by California-based Spohn Ranch, a leader in innovative skate park design, the project was shaped by community input, ensuring it reflects the needs and style preferences of the people who will use it most.
The skate park is expected to open by winter, complementing the park’s existing playground, multisport court, and picnic shelter. It will serve not only as a recreational space for skaters but also as a gathering spot for families, teens, and neighbors looking for safe, accessible activities.
As FCPA Executive Director Jai Cole noted, the skate park will make Mount Vernon Woods Park “an even more dynamic destination,” while the pickleball courts will offer “more opportunities for recreation, friendly competition, and community play.”
Why These Projects Matter for Springfield, Burke & Fairfax Station
While the new courts and skate park might sound like simple recreational upgrades, their impact stretches much further.
Lifestyle Appeal
Homes near parks and sports facilities are in high demand. For active adults, retirees, and families, having a pickleball court or skate park nearby means daily life is richer and more convenient. This kind of access can be a deciding factor when buyers are choosing between neighborhoods.

When a county invests in new, modern amenities, it’s a strong signal that the community is thriving. These projects show Fairfax County is serious about enhancing quality of life for residents. That kind of investment tends to safeguard and even boost property values.
Neighborhood Identity
These aren’t just facilities; they’re part of what makes our communities stand out.
