Northern Virginia is well known for its rich history, its great schools, and its proximity to the nation’s capital. The region isn’t known for an abundance of winter recreation. But, don’t spend another winter hibernating! This year, with a quick drive, the entire family can have fun at one of the many ski resorts nearby. With locations offering skiing, snowboarding, and snow tubing, there is sure to be fun for the whole family on these mountains! Be sure to check the resort’s webpage before you go, as many area ski hills (especially those in Pennsylvania) have promotional specials for lift tickets and rentals for kids and seniors.
1.) Whitetail Resort Mercersburg, PA
Boasting nine lifts, two terrain parks, and full snow-making coverage, Whitetail is among the closest options for a winter escape. The resort also offers snow tubing and lessons for skiing and snowboarding.
2.) Roundtop Mountain Resort Lewisberry, PA

3.) Liberty Mountain Resort Fairfield, PA
Located near historic Gettysburg, a visit to Liberty Mountain can be partnered with a trip to downtown Gettysburg where there are eateries and shops to satisfy the tastes of everyone in the family. At the resort, 16 trails, nine lifts, three terrain parks, snowtubing, and lessons will keep the family entertained. The resort also has a new hotel, restaurants, and a bar.
4.) Snowshoe Ski Resort Snowshoe, WV
If you are a serious skier, this is the mountain on the list for you. It’s in the name! SNOWshoe gets the most snowfall of any of the regional ski areas and with 57 trails, there are miles of slopes to explore.
5.) Wisp ResortMcHenry, MD
Located in Western Maryland near Deep Creek Lake, Wisp offers the gamut of winter recreation activities. The twelve lifts and four freestyle parks are great for skiing and snowboarding while other parts of the scenic resort offer snow tubing, snowmobiling, ice skating, and snowshoeing.
6.) Bryce Resort Mt. Jackson, VA
Visit Bryce Resort in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley for family fun skiing and snowboarding. While there, take advantage of the proximity to Shenandoah National Park for snowshoeing, hiking, and a drive along Skyline Drive, or a wine tour of Virginia’s best.

Located off the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway Wintergreen is a resort to be visited any time of year.
